Buchanan arrested in Penticton, B.C.

Parents can rest a little easier in Edmonton, the senior wanted in connection with a pair of attempted child abductions in the city has been arrested and charged.David Warren Buchanan, 67, was arrested in Penticton, B.C. Friday as police and RCMP members actively searched for the wanted man.Buchanan's warrants were extended to BC earlier this week and now Alberta Sheriffs will transport him back into our city over the next few days.Investigators say Buchanan has been charged with two counts of attempted child abduction and is the suspect in one other case.At this time there is ...

PCs selecting replacement for Elniski

Progressive Conservatives in Edmonton-Calder are selecting a replacement for Doug Elniski Saturday.Elniski, who was first elected in the north end riding in 2008, announced last month that he won't be running again.PCs are choosing between Bev Esslinger, a former school board chair, Cheryl Johner, the current public school trustee in ward A, and Wendy Rodgers, who has in the provincial government for over 30 years.Voting wraps up at 5 at the Kensington Community Hall.Elniski is one of several Tory MLAs, including Iris Evans, Ron Liepert and Rob Renner, who have decided not to run this spring....

Rapist faces dangerous offender hearing

The man who admitted to snatching and raping a young woman in July of 2010 has pleaded guilty to his crimes.But Anthony Winston Clark, 34, will be back before a judge later this year.  He's facing a dangerous offender hearing.The Edmonton Journal reports court heard Friday that it wasn't the first time Clark committed a random sexual assault.  His most recent one involved a 24 year old woman, who he grabbed and assaulted in a wooded area near the Queen Elizabeth Pool.  He walked into the downtown police headquarters and confessed just a couple of hours after the ...

Rae questions execution of new oilsands monitoring plan

The federal Liberal interim leader says he's disappointed that the new plan to monitor the environmental impact of the oilsands won't be run by an independent group immediately."If the data is going to have any credibility with the outside world, it's going to have to be an independent institution. York Hotel demolition underway

It's the end of an era, as the historic York Hotel gets torn down this weekend.The city has been working to remove hazardous materials from the site since it closed in March of 2010 due to safety concerns. That work was completed at the end of January, and now the building is being demolished to make way for redevelopment.The area around the hotel is part of the city's Boyle Renaissance project. High school students put their culinary skills to the test

We now know who won the $25 million Lotto 649 jackpot last month.Tim and Kendolyn Elliott of Medicine Hat came forward on Friday to claim their big prize.Tim says he checked his ticket at a gas station in Leduc, where he was staying for some job training, and couldn't believe it.The couple is planning to pursue their dream of retiring to the Okanagan. Edmonton man charged in million dollar drug bust

An Edmonton man has been caught up in a million dollar drug bust by Winnipeg police. Project Deplete began in August 2011 targeting high level independent drug traffickers operating in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba. And after numerous search and arrest warrants, 13 people have been charged including Ramsey Yaggey, 32, of Edmonton. He's facing three different trafficking charges, along with possessing the proceeds of crime. The 12 other suspects from Winnipeg, all men ranging in age from 21 to 36, are also facing trafficking charges. Six of them remain on the loose with arrest warrants in place. RCMP say they seized ...

U of A sets another new dodgeball record

In what's become a back-and-fourth affair, the University of Alberta is back on top in the Guinness World Records for the largest game of dodgeball.
