The man charged after a hostage-taking incident in downtown Edmonton last fall has fired his lawyer.

Patrick Clayton, 38, is accused of taking hostages at the Worker's Compensation Board last October.

On Monday afternoon, he fired reknowned lawyer Peter Royal, against the insistence of both, Royal and the presiding provincial court judge. Clayton choked back tears during the afternoon court appearance, telling the court that he's "done fighting" and was planning to start a hunger strike.

When asked to enter a plea on the numerous charges he's facing, Clayton answered, "No comment." The judge then made the decision that the accused will be tried by judge and jury. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April. The trial is scheduled for the end of July.  (ly, bp, ccg)
