TEAM IN TRAINING #18- THE SMELL OF TIGER BALM IN THE AIR

Posted 3/8/2010 11:19:00 AM
Our son called wondering if we could baby sit Saturday morning. I don’t like to pass up the chance to see our girls, so we said certainly as I planned to adjust my schedule to do my long run (28K this time) on Friday. As I looked at myself in the mirror I thought “wow, I look tired” as I do most Fridays, but there is something about spring that energizes you. So, jacked up on an energy bar and all hydrated up I set out. The last time I trained for a marathon I wound up with an inflamed Achilles tendon. Last week I could feel some twinges and sure enough, as I got a couple of miles from home, I knew there might be a problem. It was fine as long as I was running, but when I stopped to grab a drink, as I did three times ...

WEDDING JITTERS

My cousin, who is a member of the clergy sent me this and mentioned that she could tell some stories from weddings she has conducted. This one just about got out of control.

TEAM IN TRAINING #17- THE GEEZER FILE

Posted 3/1/2010 11:07:00 AM
This was to be an easier week on the training schedule. While last week’s long run was about 28K, the one for this past weekend on the program I’m using was 20K. Now that the runs are taking longer, I’m trying to be respectful of my family’s time so I’m not using up the whole day running on Saturday. For that reason I was out the door before 6 and back by 8. Maybe that was part of it, but I feel exhausted today. I believe I’ve reached the point in training where all the miles are adding up and there is a deep exhaustion setting in. I slept poorly last night, waking up off and on. I was nodding off watching TV last night, so while the routine calls for mileage to increase from now until race day, I think I will have to work in one more easy ...

TEAM IN TRAINING #16

Now we’re getting into some serious distances. I went for about 28K on the weekend, and it wasn’t pretty. I have a thing about carrying that water bottle in the holder on my back. It swishes around and just gets annoying, so I hold off as long as possible. I’ve been compensating by having my long runs go through Hawrylak Park so I can stop in and use the fountain at the skate shack, but I’m afraid that’s not good enough now. I should be hydrating more often.
First of all, I decided to try running Friday when I got home instead of the usual Saturday morning. By the end of the week I’m usually pretty wiped and even as I was driving home I thought this is probably not a good idea. Well, I did get through it, but between the fatigue and lack of hydration I was starting ...

AN OPRAH OOPS

It even happens to the great ones. When Superbowl QB Drew Brees cam on Oprah, she mistook his birthmark for lipstick. I guess if you're a cool guy, you just don't say anything.

TEAM IN TRANING #15

Posted 2/16/2010 10:07:00 AM
I just finished talking to Mike McGuire. This past weekend he started his group training for the Seattle marathon. He was mentioning to me how he now realizes how it’s important to go into the long runs rested since it takes a lot out of you. I just have to say how refreshing it is to hear that from someone half my age. I thought I was getting old or something. At this point our training runs for Nashville are getting longer. I was out for about 2 hours and 45 minutes Saturday morning. The run now takes me through Hawrylak, across the river and into Laurier Park before I make my way back to the Bonnie Doon area. I’ll be running out of trail at that west end soon. Maybe I’ll just go to Devon and hitch my way back.
The good news is I only got chased by ...

JUST TRYING TO HELP

Today listeners called and tried to come to Sean's rescue with something inexpensive to do for Nicole for Valentines. I'll make sure he gets this list:

14 LOVE TIPS

We consulted a panel of experts who have these 14 sensual tips to help you put the arrow back in cupid's quiver without spending a dime.

1. Find his car at work and leave an anonymous note on the steering wheel suggesting a sizzling romantic rendezvous in an unusual place, such as an elevator or a broom closet.
2. Clean the garage or spruce up his dorm room.
3. Send the kids to your mother's, then ask your honey if she's interested in indulging in her most secret fantasy.
4. Leave a note on the remote saying: "It's all yours for the weekend! No nagging, no questions asked. I promise!" sign it with hugs and kisses.
5. Wax her car ...

TEAM IN TRAINING #14- I'M GETTING FARTHER

Posted 2/8/2010 10:21:00 AM
Every Saturday when I finish my long run in preparation for the Nashville marathon, I keep thinking “well, next weekend it should be a bit warmer”. So far, I’ve been dead wrong. I got out before seven again and gave the weather office a quick call to figure out how to dress. The temperature was -21 with a -27 wind chill. All that aside, I had a pretty good run. I estimate it at about 22 K now (I’m too cheap to buy a GPS). I only got chased by one dog in the off leash area on the other side of Hawrylak Park, and after a big feed at an Indian restaurant buffet the night before, I can’t thank the city enough that their facilities are open at the ice skating area...enough said about that. While I certainly don’t have the speed or stamina I once had, it felt ...
