Today marks a very important event in our city ! It’s the annual “Walk a Mile In Her Shoes” event! The location is different – this year they’re walkin’ at 104th Street & Jasper Ave. However the message is the same – Domestic Violence Is Not OK. Ever.
The stats are downright scary…….
- In 2016, there were approximately 8,512 domestic violence calls reported to Edmonton Police Service. Many of the households where domestic violence occurs also have a child/children present, which means there is usually more than one victim.
- Alberta has the third highest rate of self-reported spousal violence in the country.
- In 2015, more than 27,000 Albertan women and children sought protection from a shelter or transition home.
- 1 in 5 men report having witnessed an abusive behavior against a woman in a social environment in the past year.
CISN’s own Chris Scheetz and Gregg Reynolds are putting on their heels today to show support for the YWCA and to take a stand against domestic violence. Way to go guys! Amber from YWCA Edmonton joined us to chat about the importance of events like Walk a Mile and having the resources available to those that need it most.
