It’s become a right of passage for Edmonton Oilers fans. This time of year we…what’s that? Freak out about another 1st overall draft pick, you say? No. Never!
This time of year, we watch the annual NHL Entry Draft and remark about just how much Harrison Katz has changed! The son of Oilers’ owner Daryl Katz has grown before our eyes…I feel like a proud Uncle! Like the kind that gives you your first taste of beer!
It all began in the Summer of 2009. After his Dad took control of the team in July of 2008, Harrison joined Daryl and the Oilers’ brass on stage to welcome Magnus Paajarvi to Edmonton!
In 2010, Harrison got to stand alongside Taylor Hall, who was drafted #1 overall! But…I wonder where he stood on the whole Taylor vs Tyler debate?
In 2011, Harrison’s style began to evolve as he rocks the collared shirt under his jersey. And…he’s almost as tall as our next #1 overall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins!
In 2012, Harrison became the first resident of “Yakcity”…
2013: Now as tall as his old man, but not nearly as tall as Darnell Nurse!
Harrison hit that growth spurt before the Summer of 2014! It looks like he’s 4-5 inches taller than the year before! Or, maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me and he’s just getting a bit of a lift from that sweet fro!
2015 was a special year. We’ll remember it as the year that Harry, as I’m calling him now, dropped the jersey for the suit! Nice tie!
Oh…and MVP MVP MVP.
We’re coming to the end of our little journey through time with the Katz Kid. By 2016 he looks more like a young hotshot analytics guy in the scouting department than heir to the Oilers’ throne.
..and tonight, the Oilers selected Winger Kailer Yamamoto at 22nd overall…and Harrison simply towered over all, including ‘The Great one’!
Seriously…what are they feeding him! All jokes aside…Harrison really has given me much to be proud of. At just 16 years of age, Harrison and his twin sister, Chloe, are giving back to the community through the Hockey Helps Kids program. Love it!
