This sad story turned happy really quick!
Now that the Oilers are in the playoffs…you have to think there’s a sizeable home ice advantage, right? Imagine how intimidating it would be for an opposing player! Dallas Stars head coach, Ken Hitchcock, might have summer it up best to 630 CHED’s Bob Stauffer…
Ken Hitchcock on playing the Oilers:— Bob Stauffer (@Bob_Stauffer) April 18, 2017
" I'm not sure it's a lot of fun playing Edmonton.., 'cause you're playing 23 players and 1.5 M people"
It’s not just the hardcores….#OrangeCrush has taken over all of Edmonton! And while some good-natured ribbing and heckling directed at the players is what being a fan is all about…some of those “fans” can take it to far.
As was the case at Game #2 down at Rogers Place. All it takes is a small group of *expletive deleted*s to ruin someone’s evening and leave a mark on what should be an incredible experience.
A tweet showcasing some Oilers fans(Hi Chris Scheetz!) down in San Jose for Game #3 was replied to by Paula Chorney, sharing sad story from Sunday night in Edmonton.
Oilers Twitter did not approve.
After tracking down the fan and his Dad, Jenny then delivered a GoFundMe page to raise a few dollars!
At game 2, some Oilers fans harrasssd a young Shark fan so badly that he felt the need to take off his jersey. As true hockey fans we know that this is unacceptable. We just want to raise some money to let the boy get some more Sharks gear and make his day!
Now that’s a true Oilers fan right there! I cannot 100% confirm your money will go to the young man, as it’s not an endeavor of my own, but If you’d like to support the cause and make up for the wrong of that group of losers….you can find the GoFundMe page “Not All Hockey Fans Are Jerks” here! And share it with the rest of Oilers nation!
In just 7 hours, $1150 has been raised!
***update as of 7:00pm April 18th***
The family has issued an earnest thank you to Oilers fans for their incredible response to this! They’ve asked that the money collected to be donated to Kids With Cancer Society on their behalf.
You guys are amazing! At the request of the boy’s dad, this page will be closed and the money will be donated to kids with cancer!! What a way to pay it forward! Thank you everyone!!! Happy hockeying!
