2006 was a great year for me personally. We had just moved to the acreage we now call home, which included a squatter that turned out to be the family member we were missing, my dog Lacy. It was also the last spring the Edmonton Oilers were in the NHL playoffs. That years team finished 8th in their division (the final playoff spot) and just kept defying the odds with a run all the way to the cup final. I had the privilege of following the team on that run, and we might have even thrown some Alberta beef on the ice in places like Detroit, San Jose, Anaheim and Raleigh, North Carolina. So many amazing memories of that time, including how INCREDIBLE the Oilers crowds were.
Too bad the boys fell just one game short. Nobody saw what was to come next happening, this long, painful, ten year playoff drought.
But after a decade of darkness, yesterday’s win against L.A. clinched a playoff spot. And as the Oilers proved in 2006, all you need is a “chip and a chair” in the playoffs. It’s going to be a great time for the city and I’m really happy for the young fans who haven’t seen playoffs in this city in their lifetime. Here’s our Corb Lund song to get you in the mood. Hockey night in Edmonton is going to be unforgettable in a couple weeks!
