Times have certainly changed. The Federal budget has increased parental leave to 18 months. 20 years ago when our kids where born, Karen got 6 months maternity leave and our Mothers would have gotten a lot less than that. Here’s a story our friends at Global News did on it.
We talked about it on air and had differing opinions, including these texts.
“I agree that parental leave being extended to 18 months is a huge milestone for Canadian families. Being a mom of three-it would have been nice to return to work after that the babies were older. My main concern is financially how many moms can take this time-max compensation rate is quite low (I think it was about $50,000 when I had my last baby). How many moms can afford to live off these wages for an additional six months?”
“I think 18 months is a fantastic idea!!! Parents that have adopted can go on parental leave and extra time to become a family is never a bad idea!-Lyndsey in Slave Lake”
“As a women in the work force I think 18 months is too long. You already have to retrain someone after being gone for a year as things change so much in a business during that time. I think you will find less women in a higher position. Having children is a choice. It would be better to go back to paying women to stay home again. Thanks Shelly”
Krista called and shared her story about her Parental leave.
Tanya was a mom who had to cut her leave short.
I know Karen cried for days going back after 6 months and would dream of having the options that are now available. I personally would have loved taking some time as well which is now an option for Dads.
