A few years ago when Kyle Schwartz started teaching Grade 3 she began the year by asking her kids 1 simple question…to fill in the blank “I wish my teacher knew ___” The responses she got blew her away “I wish my teacher knew I don’t have pencils at home to do my homework”
“I wish my teacher knew that sometimes my reading log is not signed because my mom isn’t around a lot”
“I wish my teacher knew how much I miss my dad because he got deported to Mexico when I was 3 years old and I haven’t seen him in six years”
After getting those responses she went online and started the hashtag #IWishMyTeacherKnew and it went viral, with teachers sharing answers their students gave them.
The overwhelming feedback inspired her to write a book about it “I really want families to know how intentional teachers are about creating a sense of community and creating relationships with kids. Kids don’t learn when they don’t feel safe or valued.”
