As soon as you find out you’re pregnant- a MILLION ( maybe 5 Million?) things go through your head!!
“Am I ready for this? “
“Will I be a good mom? “
“Crap no more wine”
“How will I tell my partner?”
“How will I tell my work?”
“Oh man this is going to hurt”
Or my fav – “I forget to feed my dogs!! How am I responsible enough to take care of a child?? “
You go through every emotion (sometimes in just 30 seconds haha) guaranteed.
Something I have loved these last 6 months is the advice and stories I’ve heard from other women that have been through it! Your texts, emails, calls , and comments have been awesome. There’s nothing more assuring that hearing “ ME TOO “ !
So I’ve set out on a bit of a mission– every couple of weeks Im going to be chatting with Country Music Moms about their experiences during pregnancy and having kids ( So we can all laugh together and get in on those “ me too”s ) .
If you’re a first time mom – oh girl – we are in this together! If you’re a second, third, tenth time mom – Im sure you will relate to a lot of this and hopefully relive some of the fun ( and not so fun moments) of this crazy baby life!
First up – is the beautiful wife of Dallas Smith – Kristen Smith! She and Dallas were married back in 2012 and welcomed their daughter Vayda in 2014.
How did you feel the moment you found out you were pregnant?
I was in complete shock! We were trying, but it was the month we decided to just relax and not worry so much about it that it happened! I spit toothpaste all over the bathroom mirror when the word ‘Pregnant’ popped up on the test!
Who was the first person you told and how?
I grabbed the test, ran out of the bathroom and literally jumped on Dallas and cried while waving the pee stick in his face… he was asleep. “Good Morning!’
How did you tell your families?
We told my Mum immediately as we were staying at her house in Edmonton, then told Dallas’ family at the Bob Seger show (while everyone was sitting in their seats at the show – it was Mother’s Day!) We told my Dad shortly after, had to do it in person
What were you most excited / scared for?
We were most excited to just meet her. We are a blended family, Dallas has a son from a previous marriage, so we just wanted to ensure we would be the best parents, family and team together!
Any pregnancy cravings?
I’m celiac, so everything I craved, I couldn’t eat! A friend mentioned how much she craved croissants while pregnant and from that moment on, I desperately wanted pastries… and not once could I have them. I cried a lot. ALOT.
I had sprout, it was SO exciting every week to read what changes were happening and the size of Vayda
Did you find out the gender before Vayda was born? Why or why not?
There were zero females on Dallas’ side of the family for over 28 years so we assumed it was a boy. When the ultrasound tech typed “it’s a…. girl!” on the screen, Dallas said “That’s not how you spell boy….?” We both cried. We were so excited!
What did you like most / least about being pregnant?
I loved all of it. I was SO lucky to only have nausea for a couple days. I felt great, healthy, and slept amazing all the way through……….. ‘til the day I had her.
Any crazy pregnancy stories? Hormone outbursts?
I was at a wedding and the bride promised there would be gluten free options for me to eat. There were not. At one point, I yelled that I was going to kill someone then ran off to the bathroom and sobbed for a good 15 minutes. SOBBED.
There was also an incident at Superstore when I wanted a toasted BLT and the self checkout clerk was really slow when correcting the till I was at… I told her “If you don’t get out of my way, I will literally murder you, I need my sandwich”… Fortunately, no one was killed during the pregnancy of my daughter!
I had midwives and a doula, and my doula kept saying “picture your cervix opening and allow yourbody to do what it is capable of”. As soon as I did that, things progressed right away. I had no drugs, it took ALOT of concentration and focus. And whenever I cried “I can’t do this!” she said “you’re already doing it!!” and she was right! We’re so capable of the most amazing things as women, embrace it!
When you first saw little Vayda – what was the first thing to go through your mind?
I had wondered what she would look like the whole pregnancy and as soon as I saw her, it was like I knew her the entire time, her face was so familiar to me.
Advice you were given that helped the most as a new mom?
Whenever it was REALLY hard, when I would cry from being tired or overwhelmed, my Mom would say “every single Mom has been where you are….every single one, you are not alone”. When you feel like you can’t do it, every mom has felt that way. But, you will get over that hump, and it gets better. You will feel like yourself again, even when you feel like you never will again. Life comes back. I promise!!
What has changed the most since becoming a mom?
Everything… your life is about someone else now. Making the best choices for this human that depends on you. For the first while, your needs are a close second. That being said, Baby is happiest when Mama is happy too, so take time for yourself!! Put on a sexy outfit, have a girls night, a spa day, a lone trip to the grocery store or Chapters, whatever!
Whats the BEST thing about being a mom?
The last couple of mornings, when I go in Vayda’s room to get her up, I just feel like she’s this gift that I get to unwrap, every day… there’s something new. New words, new hilarious things she says, a new expression, hearing her say “mama, I missed you! You’re awake! I love you!” it’s just the best thing in the world..nothing compares!
