“I did what I was trained to do, what I had to do,” retired police officer Peter Getz told the Hartford Courant. 18 years ago Getz and his partenr were called to an apartment fire and saved the life of 5-year-old Josibelk Aponte.
Last week, Aponte graduated from College and Getz was there to watch her receive her degree. “There are only a few moments that are so important in life. I wanted to share my graduation with everyone who’s important to me, who have been there for me, and who helped me through tough times.” She and Getz have remained close over the years and even still has the teddy bear Getz brought her in hospital. “Not many people can or are willing to put themselves in danger to save others. It’s because of people like Peter and all of our police officers and firefighters that I’m alive.”
