On Monday, The University of Alabama offered a football scholarship to 8th grade student, Jesus Machado.
I don’t understand how this is allowed by the NCAA. It sounds really cool that a student in the 8th grade could have displayed such incredible athletic talent to have justified a scholarship offer from one of the top college football programs in the United States…but there’s almost nothing to be gained by this. Verbal offers are non-binding and college recruits can’t receive written offers until their senior(Grade 12) season. So, in my opinion, all this does is load a ton of pressure and attention on a young man who may or may not be able to handle it.
Where do you come out on this? As a parent, would you even allow this discussion to be had?
Machado also received offers from at least four other college programs. And he’s not the only one!
