The King of Country himself, George Strait began his run of shows in Las Vegas on Friday(April 22) night and treated those in attendance with a tribute to another one of the genre’s all-time greats.
Kacey Musgraves opened up the “Strait to Vegas” series of shows at Las Vegas’ new T-Mobile Arena before George took to the stage for an over two hour long performance, featuring many of his 60 #1 hits. And yes, during the show, George took the time to honour another of the genre’s legends, Merle Haggard.
As he told Taste of Country, The Hag certainly inspired George.
“You know, Merle was huge in my career,” he shares. “When he did ‘Okie From Muskogee’ back in the ’70s, I kinda got hooked then, on Merle and country music.”
Playing a medley of Merle’s hits, Strait certainly paid tribute to the man that passed away on his 79th birthday on April 6th. Check out a portion of “Mama Tried” below!
