The first Olympic Games in the modern era began today in Greece. Athens played host to the “Games of the I Olympiad” from April 6th-15th, 1896.
Another round of the world’s greatest sporting spectacle is only a few months away as the Rio Summer games begin in August. I gotta tell you, I cannot wait! There’s honestly no better event in the sporting world to watch on television than an Olympic games.
I feel a ton of national pride watching our Country’s best amateur athletes compete on the world stage. There are so many incredible stories of hard word, dedication, perseverance and examples of teamwork and human will on display at each and every Olympics. And obviously, playing host to the Olympics can be an incredible boon to an economy through not only the tourism the event brings in, but the construction projects in lead up and infrastructure left behind once the games are done. One wonders though, if the Olympic games at this day in age are worthy of our support.
Now, just a couple of years removed from what was at that point the most expensive Olympics ever, much of the infrastructure and facilities built for the games in Sochi, Russia, sit collecting dust, dismantled or decaying.
Ahead of the games in Rio, many environmental hazards have some questioning whether or not the games will be safe to attend, and compete in.
And while not an Olympic Games, the working conditions of the construction for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have raised human rights questions.
So I’ll say Happy Birthday Olympics! I can’t wait to watch you this summer!
But ask at the same time…do you feel that the Olympic games are worthy of our support as a nation moving forward?
