Eric Church has an album called “Chief”, a charity called “Chief Cares” and to his friends, he’s also Chief.
The nickname came about because his pals thought with his ball-cap and aviators he looked like a police officer, or police chief. Seems like a pretty normal nickname right? Well, it is! But why is Eric so proud to have that nickname?
“Chief” was actually his grandfathers nickname first, because he was the Chief of Police in Granite Falls, N.C. Also the town where Eric grew up.
He tells Taste of Country, “So I thought it was interesting that we ended up with the same nickname, multi-generationally. And when it came to the title of the album, not only did it pay tribute to what’s happening on the road and what was happening every night, but it also paid tribute to my grandfather … He was chief, I think, for 35 years.”
You can catch Eric on the CMA Awards Wednesday night on ABC.
